National petition and demonstration against austerity measures in education and research
The federal government’s planned austerity measures will hit students and the academic world hard. They will lead to massive budget cuts in higher education and research as well as a doubling of tuition fees. This jeopardises quality and equal opportunities in the Swiss education system.
As the national umbrella organisation of Swiss student bodies, which represents the interests of over 140,000 students,VSS is calling for action to maintain a fair and publicly funded higher education system.
Why we must act:
- Education is our most valuable resource: in a country without natural resources, education is the key to innovation and economic success.
- Shortage of skilled labour is worsening: Higher tuition fees deter talented students and exacerbate the existing shortage of qualified specialists.
- Equal opportunities are being undermined: Education must not become a luxury good. An increase in fees selects on the basis of money rather than talent.
- Weakening Switzerland as a centre of innovation: Companies are dependent on highly qualified graduates. Fewer students mean less innovation and competitiveness.
- Short-term savings, long-term damage: The economy measures may save money in the short term, but they jeopardise Switzerland’s long-term stability and prosperity.
Now is the time to set an example together!

The VSS is organising a national demonstration on Wednesday 1 October 2025 at 5 p.m. on the Bundesplatz in Bern, with speeches and the official handover of the petition to the political decision-makers. As an early music musician, I recognize my educational opportunity in Switzerland as a privilege, not a entitlement. It is very expensive for me to come to Switzerland study here, but the education I receive here is singularly unique, first rate, and unattainable anywhere else. In other words, without the financial ability to study here in Switzerland, there is no where else where the same training can be obtained. Schola Cantorum Basiliensis is internationally recognized as the leading torch for early music research and performance. Other schools in the US study dissertations and research that come from the Schola. A tuition hike would certainly make this concentration of international talent unfeasible. I am very grateful to study here, and I would forever be grateful if I am financially able to still complete my studies. We love Switzerland, and aim to contribute to the society with extensive concerts and art for the public.

NEIN zu mehr Studiengebühren

Warum orientieren wir uns an anderen Ländern mit so hohen Studiengebühren (wie Großbritannien), wenn die meisten europäischen Länder keine oder nur geringe Studiengebühren erheben und einige sogar Studienbeihilfen gewähren? Warum lassen wir uns nicht von diesen Ländern inspirieren, statt von Großbritannien, wo sich gezeigt hat, dass dies nur den Reicheren zugute kommt und die Gesellschaft noch mehr spaltet? Viele Studenten, die ich kenne, sind broke und arbeiten. Bildung macht ein Land nachweislich reicher. Warum sollte man es schwieriger machen? Die meisten internationalen Studierenden, die ich kenne, bleiben auch nach ihrem Studium im Land – warum sollte man ihnen das viermal so schwer machen? Sie haben einen positiven Einfluss auf das Land und nehmen die staatlichen Beiträge der Schweiz nicht „aus dem Land“. (Außerdem gehen auch Schweizer Studierende ins Ausland.) Die besten Einwanderer sind gut ausgebildete Menschen. Warum sollte man ihnen das Leben schwer machen, wenn die Schweiz doch davon profitiert hat, dass sie für kluge Menschen aus anderen Ländern attraktiv ist und diese anzieht? Länder profitieren davon, wenn ihre Bevölkerung gut ausgebildet ist. Warum sollte man das zu einem Privileg machen? Bildung ist sehr wichtig, um Menschen aus benachteiligten Familien die Chance auf ein besseres Leben zu geben – weniger Menschen sind dann auf Sozialleistungen angewiesen. Kürzungen im Bildungsbereich sind niemals eine gute Sache.

Wie soll es man sich noch leisten Studieren zu gehen? Ich selbst arbeite 2 Jobs für 60% und Studiere zu 100%. Das Wohnen in der Nähe von Bern Zürich und Basel wird auch nicht günstiger oder unterstützt einen der Staat dabei? Das selbe mit dem ÖV, wo man sich jetzt jeden Monat überlegen will, ob man es sich leisten kann die eigenen Eltern zu besuchen!

Im europäischen Schnitt befinden wir uns als wohlhabende Schweiz bereits jetzt im höheren Bereich. Hinzu kommt, dass viele während ihrem Studium nicht noch zusätzlich viel arbeiten können, wodurch Lohn wegfällt, was wiederum den Einstieg massiv erschwert. Und wenn wir über den Atlantik hinüberschauen sehen wir ja, was überteuerte Bildung mit sich trägt. Hier wird am falschen Ort gespart!
