Petition against economy measures in the education sector: Stop the doubling of tuition fees!

The federal government’s planned economy measures are hitting students hard: tuition fees should be doubled for domestic students and quadrupled for foreign students. This jeopardises quality and equal opportunities in the Swiss education system.

Why we must act:

  • Education is our most valuable resource: in a country without natural resources, education is the key to innovation and economic success.
  • Shortage of skilled labour is worsening: Higher tuition fees deter talented students and exacerbate the existing shortage of qualified specialists.
  • Equal opportunities are being undermined: Education must not become a luxury good. An increase in fees selects on the basis of money rather than talent.
  • Weakening Switzerland as a centre of innovation: Companies are dependent on highly qualified graduates. Fewer students mean less innovation and competitiveness.
  • Short-term savings, long-term damage: The economy measures may save money in the short term, but they jeopardise Switzerland’s long-term stability and prosperity.

Now is the time to set an example together!

I’m a foreign student in Neuchâtel, I already pay a facture more expensive than the swiss. As a foreign student, I can work 15h a week, which helps me with te costs, but if the university double the price, it will be hard to me to pay all that…

Eine Erhöhung der Studiengebühren ist ein klarer Schritt gegen die Chancengleichheit. Und meistens trifft es gerade die besonders hart, die es eh schon schwer haben. Zudem heissts immer „Chasch ned beides ha s Weckli und dr Fünfliber“ aber Studierende sollen sich mit höheren Studiengebühren an dem Verlust beteiligen, den sie durch das nicht arbeiten der Gesellschaft verursachen. Gleichzeitig sollen Studierende aber auch auf Substanzielles Einkommen verzichten. Aber viele arbeiten neben dem Studium bereits oder häufig leiste Studierende wertvolle Arbeit in unbezahlten Praktika. Dass das Studium zunächst grosse Opportunitätskosten für die Studierenden verursacht ist egal. Das es Unternehmen viel kostet jemanden auszubilden und es dadurch einfach Grenzen gibt…nie davon gehört. ROI kann man das essen? Aber ich bin mir sicher, dass sich die gutbetuchten Herrschaften, die diese Meinung vertreten, ihren mehrfach promovierten Professor nicht vermissen werden wens dann irgendwann nach dem 3 Jährigem EFZ an den Operationstisch geht.

The low tuition fees allowed me to continue in higher education. Doubling fees works against equitable education, especially in a country like Switzerland where the costs of living are already so high.

I think the increasing of the tuition fees, especially for foreign students, is a bad decision for ETH. Lots of students come here (and then increase the ETH’s prestige) because it is the only high ranked university that is affordable. Personally, with the new x3 (and x4 from next year), I would have considered other options (TU Munich, as example)
